Pre-Lab Question
« on: August 16, 2009, 03:53:20 AM »
Hi.

I am currently doing the pre-lab questions to a lab i will be doing next week. The lab is about the technique of recrystallisation to separate benzoic acid from a mixture with quinine.

One of the questions of the lab is:

"Besides the normal neutral forms for benzoic acid and quinine, will there be any other chemical form(s) present in the dichloromethane solution?"

Im a little unsure as to what this is referring to. Is it referring to the possibility that the benzoic acid could deprotonate to the benzoate form?

Well, when you have an acid and a base together in solution...

Oh, are you talking about quinine acting as a base via the protonation of the lone pairs on the nitrogen groups?

 There will be some salts?
No, For the activity of benzoic acid and quinine is not high.
