Barbets test - permanganate test (on ethanol)
« on: August 16, 2009, 12:16:51 PM »
one way to determine if ethanol is without any big amount of contamination is to add potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and measure the amount of time it takes for it to react.
I would like to know exactly how to perform this test. im guessing its described in this paper http://www.iso.org/iso/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=5954
but I will not pay that amount for something i may not even understand.
in ethanol there is typically contamination from ethyl acetate, acetone and alot of other stuff.. is ethanol the slowest to react? is there some contaminaton that will not be detected? and i mean that from a realistic point of view. even if acetone would not be detected its not realistic tht there will be any, if there is no ethyl acetate, right?
please bare in mind that english is my third language, and i dont even remember if i went to any chemical class in school :)
