Question about sodium chloride and sulfuric acid reaction
« on: August 27, 2009, 09:39:44 AM »
I found two very similar problems. They both ask to count the mass of sodium chloride and sulfuric acid (which are reagents) when the amount of product is given (the amount of all materials is equal in both problems). I am wondering if the equation of NaCl and H2SO4 reaction under normal conditions differs from the one when NaCl is heated and H2SO4 is concentrated. Do these problems have same solution or is there something more to it?

Draw out the equation for the reaction that you stipulate is "normal conditions".

From the sounds of it, you have two problems, probably to do with balancing stoichiometric equations.  We cannot tell if the problems have the same solution, because you haven't given us the problems.

1. What is the mass of NaCl and H2SO4 when they reacted without heating and the volume of product was 4,48 l (n.c.)?
As far as I know n.c. means normal conditions. Pressure 1 atm, temperature 300 kelvins?

2. What is the mass of heated NaCl and conc. H2SO4 when the volume of product was 4,48 l?

Here is the equation for the chemical reaction which might be a starting help

NaCl (s) + H2SO4 (l)  :rarrow: NaHSO4 (l) + HCl (g)

I am not sure if the 4.8L is referring to the liquid NaHSO4 only. This reaction is when heat is applied. Hope it helps

I bet they want you to assume in the first case NaHSO4 is a product, and in the second case Na2SO4.
