Speed of molecule movement.
« on: September 04, 2009, 01:47:36 PM »
A question in my book asks for the speed of a solid's molecules, the speed of a liquid's molecules and the speed of a gas' molecules.
Now, what doesn't make sense to me is that this is a completely general question, because I know that the speed practically depends on the temperature.
Is there a general speed for the molecules? I know about the "type of movement" like vibration and such, and would like to make clear that that is not what I am referring to.

Thank you very much,

- Simone

The speed of the molecules is dependent upon the phase the substance is in, the speed of molecules increase from a solid to a liquid to a gas.  As for temperature, it is in direct correlation with the kinetic energy of gas particles.
