Common Reactants In Half Reactions
« on: September 09, 2009, 04:52:32 AM »
"The following (unbalanced) occurs in a basic solution:

MnO4- (aq) + S2- (aq) :rarrow: MnS (s) + S (s)

Balance this using the half reaction method."

I'm not exactly sure what the two half reactions are. I know that Mn is reduced and O is oxidized, but wouldn't that require both half reactions to contain S2- as a reactant?

MnO4- (aq) + S2- (aq) :rarrow: MnS (s)

and

S2- (aq) :rarrow: S (s)

since

MnO4- (aq) :rarrow: MnS (s)

makes no sense?

S is oxidized, not O.

i think there is somthing wrong in your reaction! 1st of all it is not balanced..where is the O in the right side?!

It is not meant to be balanced yet, at the moment 12markkram34 is trying to identify half reactions components.
