Nitric Oxide ?
« on: September 23, 2009, 10:11:48 PM »
The formula for nitric oxide is NO.

So why don't they call it Nitrogen monoxide?  The way they named it makes it sound ionic.

it is called nitrogen monoxide

the naming nitric acid goes back a while, when the used the endings ic and ous to name oxy acids. Ic was used to indicate that the oxygen content per nitrogen (in this case) is higher then nitrous oxide
