carbocation and carbanion

hey does any1 know whether the terms "carbanion" and "carbocation" refer to a whole molecule, or just to the C in a molecule?

Technically it should just refer to a ionicly charged carbon atom and the proper term for the whole molecule should be a "carbocation intermediate."
