Software for Organic chemistry
« on: October 18, 2009, 07:32:15 PM »
Hey guys i am taking organic chemistry for the first time!
and i have a lab, i was wondering if you guys knew of an excellent program that runs on snow leopard because chemdraw dose not, unless i install virtual pc, which i do not even own a copy of windows!

i just need to draw structure diagrams , and the mechanisms,

i am a student, therefore freeware is the way to go.

Thanks you

I thought ChemDraw had an up to date mac version... ? We have ChemBioDraw 12 on all our macs at work, but we don't have any machines with Snow Leopard. I'd talk to the IT people in your department because you probably have site licenses for various packages that will be better than freeware. You could have a go with chemsketch http://www.acdlabs.com/download/chemsketch/ but I have no idea if that works on a mac.

I'm pretty sure that ChemDraw works on Mac without the need of Virtual PC. It's up and running right now. Just check that the version you've downloaded is the Mac version and not the Windows version.

If it still doesn't work, you could use ChemSketch as Dan recommended, and there's also ISISDraw, although the molecule sketches aren't as "pretty" as the ones from ChemSketch...

He is right! chemdraw do not work with Snow Leopard. So you need set up Visual PC to run Chemdraw..

If nothing else works - read the manual.
