Help please Acids & bases
« on: October 23, 2009, 03:26:33 AM »
Calculate how much acid (acetic acid) and how much conjugate base (sodium acetate) must be used to make 500mL of a 0.8M acetate buffer having a pH of 4.76.  Assume the pKa for the dissociation of acetic acid is 4.76.  How much of each must be added if the desired pH is 5.76.

What have you studied about:

How to calculate pH?
What does Ka and pKa of an acid mean?
What is a buffer?
How does the buffer made from acid (acetic acid) and how much conjugate base (sodium acetate) operate?

When we know what you know on these topics we will know how to help.

If you know nothing of the topics above you will need to study them from your texts before attempting the question.
