How many joules in 1 calorie?

4.184 J = 1 cal
or
1 J = .239 cal

...so the answer should be 4565 cal but if you look at the posted image above, it's one of the wrong answers (it's the 5th answer that I submitted).

Sorry, my memory played a trick on me - I remembered 4.182 (which is not completely off, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calorie#Variations).

Still, that will give one of the answers you have already tried. 4565 is wrong - you should give 3 significant digits only. IMHO one of the answers given, either 4.56e3 or 4.57e3, should be accepted.

I asked the MasteringChemistry.com CSRs and they said that my answer is wrong that's why I keep getting the 'Try Again' message but I've told them that my calculations should be correct.

Oh, well... guess I'll take the -10 pts. :(

wait a moment - isn't Cal different from cal?

What do you mean? What else can Cal be short for other than calorie? Maybe that's why I keep getting the wrong answer, LOL - I'm converting to the wrong Cal!  :P

kcal, so called large calories, the ones used when giving food nutritional value. For me this is stupid, but that's what they may be referring to.

OMG, I finally got it! You were right - I converted joules to kcal and got 4.57 Cal and it accepted the answer!

Note to self:

cal = calorie
Cal = kilocalorie

Thanks!  :D
