What's wrong with this reaction of exhaust gases from engines?

Heres the questions:



In part:
 b) (i). why does Nitrogen make up most exhaust fumes? Never understand this!

c) (i).  Is Gas II & its effect relevant & correct?
    (ii)  exam Answers says Gas I & Gas II removal reactions are not correct (balanced)
        How else am i to balance it...either way works but is there a rule.

Theres always confusions with such reactions, so is there a rule that applies in all reactions?? How to know the real products that will form with reactants??   :-\ >:(

What gases enter the engine?

Well , when octane (e.g of 1 of components in petrol) is combusted
it forms CO2 and H2O so where's the nitrogen in products??

Is it the nitrogen (which is mostly) in air that enters the combustion chambers of the engine and passes through the  exhaust fumes unaffected by other fumes??

If so then please respond to my other doubts...!
