When Buta-1,3 diene is treated with HBr, 1-4 addition takes place. Can you please explain why?

I think the best way to answer this question is to think in terms of the mechanism here.  What would be the very first thing that happens (not the overall reaction, just one step of the mechanism) when you treat 1,3-butadiene with HBr (rr any acid, really)?
