scared about contact with nanoparticle.
« on: November 30, 2009, 04:51:14 AM »
I just started to synthesize iron oxide nanoparticle(magnetite). Once during magnetic decantation of iron nanoparticle, beaker was broken. My hand was full of black ppt of magnetite. Is there any need to get worry regardin my health?(I am conerned about penetration of nanoparticles through skin pores).
Secondly, i did not wear any mask during grinding of these nanoparticles in mortar and pestle for IR and SEM analysis.
However, i worked on few samples only.
Is there anything to be taken serious regarding my health.
what more precautions may i take in future?

Gloves when working with slurry, perhaps some mask when dealing with dry dust won't hurt, but I don't think there is any serious risk from an occasional exposure. People work with iron oxides for hundreds of years, I don't remember reading about iron industry being troubled by high mortality rate ;)
