Amount in Ml from Drops per Ml
« on: December 14, 2009, 08:35:01 PM »
I'm working on a lab and I need to fond the amount (in Ml) of 9 drops when 96 drops equals one Ml. I'm sure it's an easy solution but it's giving me a headache. Thanks

I assume by "amount" you mean volume, and I assume Ml = mL (mililiters)

So, think about this maybe, if 100 drops = 1 mL

How many mL would 10 drops be equal to?  [Hint, think in terms of a ratio]

Or if it's easier, how many drops would 0.50 mL(half 1 mL) be equal to?

If you can get it with the easy powers of 10 numbers, apply that same strategy to the 96 and 9

Yeah, I meant milliliters, sorry.

Would my ratio be (96drops/1ml=9drops/ ? ml)?
Then use basic algebra to solve the ratio?

Yes that is correct, what number do you get for the volume (in mL) ?

I'm getting .09375 Ml but that doesn't make sense to me.

Why not?  if 100 drops = 1 mL, then 10 drops (1/10th the # of drops) should equal 1/10th the volume, which is 0.10 mL.

You have 96 drops, and a 9 drop sample (that is about 1/10th) so your volume, in mL should also be about 1/10th.

1/10th of 1 mL is 0.10 mL, and you got 0.094 mL which is very close to 0.10 mL

Well when you put it that way, it sounds right. That's what I did the first time, I scribbled it out. Gotta stop second guessing myself. Thanks a lot for the help. I think I should finally be able to finish this lab report.

No problem.  It is always good to check your work, make sure units cancel out and the number makes sense.

I agree though, every single time I have changed my first answer on a test (first instinct) I change it to the wrong thing.  I have done that time and time again, I don't know why humans are so good at talking themselves out of their first instinct.

Just wondering, what lab is it?

The lab is finding Avagodro's number from a monolayer.

Note: you are consistently using Ml instead of ml or mL. Of these three only Ml is wrong.
