Contests
« on: December 19, 2009, 11:58:19 AM »
Hey guys

I was thinking... why not organise online chem contests?

Something where people can participate, submit answers, get them reviewed and discuss with other members on the forum. That ought to be fun..

Well, we could have 3 divisions/levels : high school, undergrad, postgrad.

Some 5 to 10 problems. This could be done on a monthly basis / bi-monthly basis and answers could be sent to the moderators who could then review them and give the participants their scores. When the contest ends everybody's scores can be put up in the respective forums.

So, what do you guys think?

I like the idea, but maybe we could scale it down for the first trial run. Like keep it to one division for the first couple of times, and keep it down to one question the first time.

The main problem I see with using the forum is that as soon as people start posting for help with the contest the answers will start to spill out.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

You could lock the topic after posting the questions.

But we can't do anything about personal messages or other topics being opened, can we? We can hope the members live upto the spirit of the contest.

Maybe we could ask a question that there is no great answer for and see what they come up with. My favorite chemistry question to ask a professor is, "What is the most common chemical reaction on planet Earth?" They squirm like crazy.

Hey guys

Thought I'd revive this topic with a poll  :)

Please post your ideas/suggestions for the same.

I think it's a nice idea  ;D
