Free Energy change
« on: January 02, 2010, 05:54:10 AM »
The densities of graphite and diamond are 2.26 and 3.53 g/cc. If the transformation of graphite to diamond takes place at 1.5 X 10^9 Pa at a given temp., the standard free energy change accompanying the process is?

The solution starts with
delta G = - P * delta V

Can you please tell me why?

Do you know any other expression for (in terms of other physical quantities) ?

delta G = delta H  -  T * delta S

Is P * delta V derived from the above equation?

Oops!

Now put expression for $$ \Delta H /$$ in that for $$ \Delta G /$$ you'll get the reqd.

That can happen only if delta U = T* delta S?
