How to determine what's a nucleophile?
« on: February 05, 2010, 11:40:54 PM »
Why is CH3Cl a electrophile and CH3NH2 a nucleophile?

Isn't CH3Cl full of electrons? Why is it deficient? =/

CH3Cl is an electrophile b/c the electronegative chlorine is pulling electron density away from the carbon. The CH3NH2 is a nucleophile b/c of the lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen.
