How hard is it to make an Herbal extract?
« on: February 04, 2010, 06:11:47 PM »
Hello, Im looking to try and make an extract from White button Mushroom.(agaricus bisporus).

I Would like to do this because of this study:
http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/content/full/131/12/3288

The study show how white button mushroom extract reduced estrogen leves by up to 50% in some Post breast cancer women.
This was a 2,000 female double blind study.

In the study it actually goes into detail about how they made the extract(look under "Materials and Methods"), Do you guys think it would be possible for me to make the same extract at home?

Are there any easier ways for me to make this extract?

Do you think that cell study methods will give you something you can ingest and have the same effect?
Do you have all of the equipment to do the following?

Quote
Heat-stable extracts from green onion, celery, carrot, bell pepper, broccoli, spinach and mushroom were prepared by boiling in water (70 g wet matter/200 mL H2O) and centrifuging at 35,000 x g for 30 min. The supernatant was Millipore (0.45 µm; Bedford, MA) filtered, concentrated in a Speed-VAC centrifuge and reconstituted in H2O at 7.5X concentration (7.5XH2O). Heat was used to break up the compartmentalization that exists in biological materials (35Citation ).

For the kinetic analysis, cell culture studies, step gradient separations and HPLC analysis, stock preparation of the mushroom extract was prepared from fresh, washed white button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus). The lyophilized heat-stable white button mushroom extract was reconstituted as a 10X stock concentrate in water (10XH2O) or culture medium (10XCM) as indicated below for individua studies.
