I have another generic question.

Since a lot of people on the forum come and make a username to ask a single question, there's a lot of names on the member list with 0, 1 or 2 posts...is this list ever purged for inactive users?  Or does it just keep growing?

Whoever hasn't logged in within a hundred days gets purged.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

100days is slightly more than 3 calendar months, don't you think so?

inactive members are purged to help relieve the load of the internet server and forum software. after-all, this forum is a community service and btw hosting is not free. there are hardly any advertisements here, if you realise.

Mitch, do you think it would be possible to leave my username un-purged if for any reason, I am unable to log on for a while in the near future, because there is a remote chance  I could be going to prison within a few months, although unlikely :(

My guess is that if you've been a contributing member and have a few hundred posts your account won't be destroyed for a while.  I won't mess with it at least.  I will kill the bozos that have 1 or 0 posts and havne't logged in for months.
