Reactions and Equations Help
« on: March 12, 2010, 08:15:10 PM »
Hey.

I did an experiment in science last week and i have no idea how to balance the second equation or what it is doing and if i got the first reaction right. Can any one help?

The first reaction was:
CaCl2(aq)+Na2CO3(aq) --> 2NaCl(aq) + CaCO3 (s)

We then added Sulfuric Acid to the Sodium Chloride and Calcium Carbonate.
2NaCl(aq) + CaCO3 (s) + H2SO4(aq) --> ?

What does the second part of the equation then become? And what type of reaction is it? What is actually Happening?

Cheers.

What did you observe in the two steps? Observation always precedes explanation in chemistry.

One approach is to consider the two reactions separately

What is the reaction (if any) of dilute sulphuric acid with sodium chloride?
What is the reaction (if any) of dilute sulphuric acid with calcium carbonate?

CaCl2(aq)+Na2CO3(aq) --> 2NaCl(aq) + CaCO3 (s)

See in this equation one product precipitates. If you had filtered to separate the products then the two reactions might have been easier to interpret.
