[Co(NH3)3(NO2)3] triamminetrinitrocobalt(III)
« on: March 23, 2010, 06:42:24 AM »
Hi

I'm making [Co(NH3)3(NO2)3] triamminetrinitrocobalt(III) using CoCl2.6H2O.

I've precipitated CoCO3 by adding Na2CO3 and dissolved it with acetic acid and added the Co2+ (i still assume its (II)) to NH3 solution containing NaNO2 in hopes of adding three ammines and three nitros.

This step I still assume its Co(II) as [Co(NH3)3(NO2)3]-

I am instructed to add H2O2 in ice bath then add activated charcoal to catalyse a reaction combined with heating to achieve the end product.

Does the H2O2 provide the right conditions to oxidise Co(II) to Co(III), involve with fac and mer isomerism, or guide equal proportions of ammine and nitro ligands? Or is this the activated charcoal catalyst's job?
