Does Conc. Hydrochloric Acid get oxidised by KNO3
« on: March 20, 2010, 01:41:09 AM »
My guess is no. But does my hypothetical reaction

12 HCl + 2 KNO3  :rarrow:2 KCl + 6 H2O + 5 Cl2 + N2

Ever actually take place. I know that hypochlorites and permanganate can oxidize hcl

Or google Aqua Regia.

I'm extremely sorry. I misread the topic as : HNO3.

Anyway, it does react, and as Borek rightly pointed out, is it used to make aqua regia

Infact, it's exactly the same, since you use HCl: in solution you have the same ions.

Oh that's right I forgot that Conc. HCl acid + KNO3 is practically the same as nitric acid. Since Nitric acid is just H3O+ and NO3- flouting around in solution so when the mixture decomposes it's

KNO3 + 4 HCl  :rarrow: KCl + NOCl + Cl2 + 2 H2O

It is not exactly the same, it is less acidic. But chemistry of the solution will be very similar.
