Enthalpy of reaction - Calcium Hydroxide + Citric Acid
« on: April 09, 2010, 05:43:10 AM »
Hello,

Can someone please help me??? I am looking for the enthalpy of reaction for the following reaction:

3Ca(OH)2  +  2C6H8O7   =>  Ca3(C6H5O7)2.4H20 + 2H20

Calcium Hydroxide + Citric Acid to give Tricalcium Citrate and Water

Any information would be greatly appreciated???

Thanks

The enthalpy of reaction of a reaction is equal to the enthalpy of formation of (Products - Reactants).

So.  Take a chemistry textbook, go to the index in the back, you will see a Hof which is the enthalpy of formation at STP.  Add up the enthalpy of formations of the products, and then SUBTRACT the sum of the enthalpy of formation of the reactants.  Be careful with signs, and units.

Just noticed...the index will most likely have Calcium hydroxide and citric acid...but I don't know about the tricalcium citrate tetra hydrate.  I could be wrong though, check it out, also google them if you don't have a textbook.
