Determining the product of the reaction BrF3 + SnF4?
« on: April 13, 2010, 10:43:34 AM »
I know that BrF3 + AgF --> BrF4- + Ag+ but I am not sure why we get the following products in the reaction: BrF3 + SnF4 ---> BrF2+ + SnF5-.

I thought maybe the products would be BrF4- and SnF3+ based on the first reaction, but it is not. Could someone please explain why the products are BrF2+ + SnF5-?

Thank you.
