Hybrid orbitals.
« on: July 28, 2005, 09:55:01 AM »
I just want to consult on something.

Consider a bond formed by the overlapping of following orbitals.

1.s-s
2.sp-sp
3.sp2-sp2
4.sp3-sp3
5.p-p

Now if we eliminate rest of the factors. Then which overlap will make the strongest bond.Is it sp3-sp3 due to better overlapping of most directional hybrid orbitals?am i correct?

And which is the weakest overlap. Is it in s-s overlap.

Can anyone provide me the link showing the Overlapping of hybrid orbitals.

The more s-character in the bond the stronger it will be.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

Use Google's Image Search for ethene and methane.
