Solubility???

Why is 1-butanol, CH3CH2CH2CH - OH, soluble in water but heptane, CH3(CH2)5CH3 is not???

What does butanol have that heptane does not?

Yup the OH gives butanol a site for hydrogen bonding to occur and allowing it to dissolve it also is a polar molecule (like dissolves like) where as CH3(CH2)5CH3 is non-polar.

because -OH is a polarity group
