Alkyl Halides in Acid/Base
« on: May 18, 2010, 09:25:51 AM »
Hi,
I have an interesting question.  When mixing a hydrocarbon stream containing ppm levels of methyl bromide or methyl chloride with a 50% sulfuric acid solution, I don't see these molecules change - does this seem correct?  Also, when the stream comes in contact with a slightly basic water wash, the alkyl halides don't hydrolize... I'm wondering if I dramatically increase the concentration of sodium hydroxide (pH ~11), would I expect to see methanol and a sodium halide salt?  Any feedback will be appreciated...  Thanks!
