Whats this Soxhlet extractor like apparatus called?
« on: November 13, 2010, 03:28:36 PM »
In college we did a plant matter extraction but since Soxhlets were in short supply, we just placed some filter paper inside a beaker filled with solvent, placed the plant matter in the filter paper then covered the beaker with a watch glass and put ice on the watch glass. This apparatus worked just like a Soxhlet extractor but is this apparatus actually a Soxhlet or does it have another name?

This would be more like a dialysis, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialysis_(biochemistry)

The filter paper was simply a means of keep the bulk plant matter from flaking into the solvent, while letting the solvent leech out your extractable components.  But it does work on essentially the same concept as a soxhlet extractor.
