Oxidation of methyl group on 3-methyl-1,3-pentadiene
« on: September 06, 2010, 12:30:23 AM »
Hi there,

Is it possible to oxidize CH2=CH-C=CH-CH3 into CH2=CH-C=CH-CH3
                                            \                               \
                                            CH3                            COOH

without oxidizing the double bonds? If so, do you know the oxidizing agent and conditions that will do it?

I really don't know of anything that could do that. Was this an exam question or for a lab or what?

No exam, just personal research. Hmm maybe if I find something that can do it I can have the reaction named after me...

If you find it online probably not but if you figure that out in the lab, good for you!
