Salt of Tin, what is salt of tin?
« on: August 25, 2010, 06:07:34 AM »
Hello,
Can anyone help me with this Question?
What is... salt of tin?
I want to colour brass letters with rainbow hues.
I have an old book "Twentieth Century Formula's"  page 570.
I have worked out the other items, but this on has stumped me.

thanks

Perhaps this may help someone to answer my question.
Below is what I have.

Production of Rainbow Hues on Brass

The sulphide of tin may be deposited on metallic surfaces , espically  on brass, communicating shades  varying with the thickness of the deposit. For this purpose, Puscher prepares the following solutions:

Disolve tartaric acid 20 parts, water 1000 parts.
add, a salt of tin, 20 parts, water 125 parts.
Boil the mixture, allow it to repose and filter.
Afterwards pour the clear portion a little at a time, shaking continually, into a solution  of…
hypossulphite of soda 80 parts, water 250 parts.
On boiling sulphide of tin is formed, with precipitation of sulphur .
On plunging the pieces of brass in the liquid, they are covered according to the period of immersion with varied shades, passing from gold yellow to red, to crimson, to blue, and finally to light brown

Salt of tin must be one of the following.
Tin chloride (stannous), SnCl2

Tin chloride (stannic) SnCl4

Tin oxide (stannous), SnO

Tin oxide(stannic) SnO2

Can someonr tell me which one, please.

Oxides can be ruled out, that leaves chlorides. My guess is SnCl2, but that's just a guess. I don't see why the recipe may need tin oxidized to +4.

Thank You, Borek.

I will give that a try, if nothing else is suggested by all you smart fellas out there.

The trouble is, it is very expensive, I have priced some...
TIN CHLORIDE
hydrated unilab.
It costs in Australian Dollars $336.00AU for 500g.
So you see if I get the wrong chemical, its money I cant afford down the drain.

Is that the same chemical as your answer, Borek?

Thanks for your help,

Just realized,
What I priced was...
TIN (II) CHLORIDE.

Stannous chloride = tin(II) chloride = SnCl2

Thanks Borek,
Think I finally have it...

What I need is...
TIN (II) Chloride
Anhydrous, not Hydrated as I want a salt not a liquid.
Would you agree with this?

I think it doesn't matter if you will get hydrated or anhydrous - just compare prices and remember that there is more moles of substance per mass in anhydrous salt, could be one be cheaper per the same amount of tin. Other than that I guess you are right.

Still, there is a small chance we are both wrong...   ???

Moreover some anhydrous salts are difficult to obtain and are (much) more expensive.

I have checked prices on Tin Chloride. It is around $180/500g in Canada on VWR.com.

Aldrich is famous for quality and express delivery. If you do not need high purity (and you do not 95% purity should be OK) and can wait a few days, you will find a local supplier at lower price.  Try to find local school board supplier or small distributor.

On the same note. You likely can use any soluble salt of tin (Tin or Stannous -Sulfate, -Nitrate, -Chloride and some more). In your process tin precipitates as tin sulfide, so it should not matter what you start with.

you could use various salts but tin chloride is probably best for this method.  be aware that it is not so good for the health, and when it dissolves in water it generates some HCl.  care is required.
