What does the retention time represent? In other words, what is its significance?

It represents the amount of time an analyte is retained in a chromatographic separation.  :P

when looking at a chromatogram it represents the time it takes the analyte to elude and can be viewed in the form of a peak....

The time it takes for the volume of water in a lake to exit through its outlet (ie, total volume/outlet flow = retention time).
