% composition/mass/mole equation trouble
« on: October 04, 2010, 03:59:28 PM »
The question is:
Ilmenite is a mineral that is an oxide of iron and titanium, FeTiO3. If an ore that contains ilmenite is 6.75% titanium, what is the mass (in grams) of ilmenite in 1.00 metric ton (exactly 1000kg) of the ore?

So I took .0675 x 1000kg = 67.5kg Ti

then...
67.5kg Ti x 1000g Ti/ 1kg Ti x 1 mole Ti/47.88g Ti x 1mole FeTiO3 / 1 mole Ti x 151.709 g FeTiO3 / 1 mole FeTiO3 = 21387.5 g FeTiO3 = 2.14X104g FeTiO3

Only my text says the answer is 2.14X105
And I can't figure out where I've gone wrong with missing a decimal place....
 ???
Thanks for any help you can give me :)
