molecular weight/formula

Question: an unknown substance is emirically determined to be 40.00% Carbon by weight, 6.57% hydrogen, and 53.33% oxygen. Its molecular weight is roughly 55g/mol. determine the molecular formula and its correct molecular wight.

My Working So Far:
40% C = 22g = 1.8C
6.67% H = 3.66g =3.6H
53.33% O = 29.3315g = 1.8O

therefore molecular formula is CH20..
is this correct so far and how do i find the correct molecular weight?

your working is  correct but molecular formula what you written is wrong. In the molecular formula no of element is whole number not a decimal one like 1.8C.So rounding off what value you got e.g. 3.6H =4H,1.8O=2 like this

finally you will get C2H4O2
the above is actual formula then find out molecular weight by applying atomic weight of each element

calculate and tell me answer?

thanks for your help:

the molecular weight of C2H4O2 would be 60.06 g
