How does iron ore enrichment work?

Why do things rust more now than in the 18th century?

Acid rain; the result of sulfuric acid in the air, or maybe CO2(carbon dioxide) because things tend to rust more when the air is "full"...(this is pretty much a guess and if I'm in the right direction please tell me so )
