Rate Constant of the Overall Net Reaction
« on: October 20, 2010, 03:51:24 PM »
The reaction of ozone with oxygen atoms in the presence of chlorine atoms can occur by the two-step process shown here with the rate constant for each step.

O3(g) + Cl(g) :rarrow: O2(g) + ClO(g) k1=5.2*109
ClO(g) + O(g) :rarrow: Cl(g) + O2(g) k2=2.6*1010

What is the value of the rate constant of the overall net reaction? Shouldn’t it be k1*k2=1.4*1020?
