TLC & Fractional Distillation Questions
« on: October 31, 2010, 08:49:31 PM »
- If the boiling points of two compounds differ by 50oC at atmospheric pressure, what will be
the effect on the relationship by decreasing the pressure to 1mm?

- What will happen to the efficiency of a distillation if the distilling flask is more than half
full? Nearly empty?

- Why are packed or spinning band columns more efficient that a non-packed column (like
yours) for a fractional distillation?

----
1. What would the result be if the following errors were made in a TLC experiment?
a. spots too large
b. a solvent with too low a polarity
c. a solvent with too high a polarity
d. the solvent ran beyond the top of the plate

2. How would you expect Rf values to change if you went from a hexane-ethyl acetate
solvent system to hexane only?

3. Two spots on a TLC plate have very similar Rf values . Could they be the same
compound? Describe a method to determine whether they are the same or different?
