i'm not a specialist in organic but here's my guess.

There must be an electrophilic attach on the free electron pairs of O in the hydroxylgroup by a proton. This will result in an OH2(+)-group, a good leaving group resulting in the dehydration.

It's a typical elimination reaction. What kind of solvent and pH do you have (what mechanism do you want)?
Math and alcohol don't mix, so... please, don't drink and derive!

I was thinking of having  OH2+ as a leaving group via acid catalysis.  The you get .

4-methylcyclohex-1-ene + H2O.  does that sound right?

Read the Question of the Day, forum.  This question is there with an explanation.
