"Caustic Solution" for silver extraction
« on: November 16, 2010, 10:40:38 PM »
Have a question about a hobby experiment that I want to try...

I have about 15,000 feet of expired 35mm movie film, and I wanted to extract the silver from it.

I've read online that I need to burn the film, place the ash in a "caustic solution", dump that into a electrolysis machine, and collect the silver from the cathode...

Based on the "how to" - http://www.ehow.com/how_4501375_extract-silver.html

My question is, is what would that 'caustic solution' be?  Nitric Acid?  Sodium Hydroxide?  Lemon Juice/salt?

And when setting up the electrolysis machine, what type of metal should be dipped into the tub, connected to the charger?  Copper? Steel?

Lemme know what you think, and thanks for your time!
