question about calculating atom economy
« on: November 29, 2010, 09:22:34 PM »
i need to calculate the atom economy fro the iodination of vanillin. this reaction uses NaI as a source of iodine and sodium hypochlorite as an oxidizing agent. my question is: do i include the sodium hypochlorite in the denominator of the atom economy calculation? I feel that i should because it is being used up in the reaction.

mol weight vanillin: 152
mol weight sodium iodide: 150
mol weight sodium hypochlorite: 74.4
mol weight 5-iodovanillin: 278

so my final calculation would be 278/(152+74.4+150) = 73.9%

i included a pic for clarification of the reaction
