Formation of Sulfate and Sulfite

I have a question that asks
" How do sulfate and sulfite form in the first place?"

I haven't been able to find any information on their formation...Is that what its asking...Am I making any sense?!

here's a clue: u cant form them by a direct reaction, but by through several reactions.
