Odd lab glassware
« on: December 29, 2010, 07:28:53 PM »
I was at an antique shop earlier today and found a lot of old lab glassware. One piece in particular looked very odd. The owner of the shop had no idea what it was so he gave it to me. It essentially looks like a corn dog, one end is a lot wider than the other. The thinner end is about a 5mm wide solid glass rod, and the wider end is about 2cm wide with rounded tips and a small hole at the end. The wider end is completely hollow. My main questions are what is this thing and what was it used for? I thought it may be some sort of gentle mixing device (hold the smaller end and twirl around) but if you fill it with water and turn it upside-down the water stays inside because the hole is small enough. Here's a picture

The picture is missing, but I have a few speculative guesses.
1) Safety funnel: Only if the small end is hollow and has an opening, but you said it didn't but still possible.
2) Glass tubing: Is the small end completely solid? Or hollow without an opening?

What kind of lab equipment was this with?

The small end is completely solid, the wide end completely hollow. I can see the picture fine one my computer as well as one of my friend's computer so that may just be a problem with your computer, for some reason the image came out very large so you have to scroll through it a bit. It was just with a few flasks and some beakers, nothing else out of the ordinary.

I will try to post the image again though...
