drawing dash formulas
« on: September 05, 2005, 12:29:36 AM »
how do I know how to draw a forumla such as CH3CH=CHCH3?

I would draw it as

    H  H H  H
    |  |  |  |
H-C-C=C-C-H
    |         |
    H        H

the way my book shows it is the following, plus some stereo isomers.

H3C       CH3
     \      /
      C=C
     /      \
   H        H

Actually, your one is OK but the 2nd one is better.

When you know the hybridization of carbons, you will know the bond angles.

However, from your molecular formula, you won't know the molecule is either cis or trans.

ok thanks, that was actually the question I was working on...identifying cis-trans compounds. I guess I need to study the hybridization.
