Is it possible to simply substitute carbon for Si in a photovoltaic cell?

I do not know the answer to this but if you could I would bet the efficiency would be extremely low or it would have been done.

On the other hand photosynthesis creates energy from the sun.

By the way there is another board on this forum that discusses energy and chemistry
