Benzene-1,2-dicarbonitrile (BCN) colour
« on: February 07, 2011, 12:25:53 AM »
Hello everybody,

I have a small problem. Today I get a new package of BCN but instead of white colour, it is green. Do you know why? Have you ever encountered with green form of BCN? Thank you very much

I think it has cyclized.

I think it has cyclized.

Well but cyclized to what. One possibility is 4 same moleculas of BCN. But can I uncycle it?

Try recrystallizing to remove the impurity (I'm guessing it's a solid).

The impurity may not make a difference if it's in small amount. You can run a small scale rxn and check.

I couldn't remember the name, but that is what I was thinking about. I don't think you can reverse it.

If you bought it before and it was white, I'd contact the supplier and see what they say. What purity do they offer? Is it in spec? If not, they should give you a new sample. I'd start there.
