Example of a molecular material that is an electrolyte
« on: February 18, 2011, 11:23:37 AM »
I had a question on a recent exam that I got wrong. It was to give an example of a molecular material that is an electrolyte. I chose HCl and stated that it is molecular. Then I stated that it contains H+ and Cl-. He underlined the part where I wrote H+ and Cl- and marked it as incorrect.

From what I understand, HCl in aqueous solution forms H3O+ and Cl- but wouldn't HCl just contain H+ and Cl-?

in aqueous solution it is indeed an electrolyte... but it asked you for a molecular electrolyte. In gaseous form, HCl doesn't conduct, aka, in molecular form is does not consist of H+ and Cl-, just H-Cl
