Naming an alcohol systematically?
« on: February 21, 2011, 04:57:58 PM »
Hi,

Can anyone explain how to fix this answer?

I figure you count the longest chain with the hydroxy group on it, then name the second carbon substituent which I would think is sec-butyl? :)

Your thinking is correct, but you need to be more explicit when using IUPAC nomenclature.  You can't use sec-butyl, try something else.

There are two 5-carbon chains ending in with a hydroxy group.
Would it be just as valid to go down the other chain and name it 2-propyl-3-methyl pentanol?
Or does IUPAC want you to minimize the number of substituents?

Oh I didn't see the other chain! But I think your name is correct. Because it is simpler to go down the chain that has the simplest branching on it?

If not then, I would guess that I would have to name it 2-(1-methylpropyl)-1-pentanol?

I think cswarth's answer is more along the correct lines.

Yes I believe it is best to use the simplest branching chain when given the choice! Thanks :)
