A Titration of Sodium Carbonate
« on: February 23, 2011, 06:57:26 PM »
Hi,

I'll be performing a titration of sodium carbonate, as a tablet. Since sodium carbonate is insoluble in water, I won't be able to make a solution. So I must titrate the tablet itself, but I also need an indicator to notice the endpoint. I don't know how to add the indicator though, because if I'm titrating the tablet itself, there would be no liquids surrounding the tablet, and therefore the indicator wouldn't mix... Is there a solution to this? Thank you very much!

Simple solution: throw a tablet into water.

Better solution: throw a grinded table into water.

Best solution: throw a tablet into excess acid and do back titration of excess acid.

And dont forget to add some indicator like Phenolphthalein. Or use a pH-Probe.

Since sodium carbonate is insoluble in water
It is not true statement. Sodium carbonate is good soluble in water
