Determining Lattice energy
« on: March 03, 2011, 05:47:21 PM »
For each pair, choose the compound with the higher lattice energy:
a)BaS or CsCl       b) LiCl or CsCl

I'm not very sure how to determine this.
Did i take the right approach here?
a) I say that BaS has higher lattice energy because it has higher charges on ions
b) LiCl has higher lattice energy because Li+ is smaller in size than Cs+

Am i correct? thanks

Looks OK to me. Such comparisons can be risky, but the compounds are selected in such a way that all other parameters are close or at least very similar, so approach works here.
