Actually it makes sense, that's what stoichiometry is about. Same number of moles of CaCl2 and Na2CO3 react giving same number of CaCO3 and twice that number of moles of NaCl. If there is an excess of one of the reactants (be it CaCl2 or Na2CO3) it won't react - it will be left in the mixture, as it has nothing it can react with.
