If I'm wanting to extract an unknown residue, will chloroform and ethanol work as well as chloroform and methanol?

It has been implied to me that this will work, but it doesn't sound right.  I have been unable to find anything explaining the differences between methanol and ethanol in this context.

Well, if it is an unknown residue there is no way we can no if it is soluble in any of those, and are you trying to remove it from a compound that is not soluble in those...etc.

well, here is perhaps a better way to phrase the question:

Why is chloroform methanol used for lipid extraction instead of chloroform ethanol?  What are the potential differences between either alcohol?
